Brown Bags Boomers Job

Brett Brown, who began his coaching career in the New Zealand NBL, has been selected as head coach of Australia’s men’s basketball team - the Boomers - through to London 2012.

Brown, a 48-year old American, has been an assistant coach with the famed San Antonio Spurs in the NBA for the past six years and has extensive experience with the Boomers programme and the Australian National Basketball League.

Abo Grabs POW Honours

Just when it looked like Corey Webster would bolt in for Rookie of the Year, Thomas Abercrombie has entered the mix.

He is the second rookie to be named Player of the Week this season. Abercrombie was very active on the defensive end grabbing 10 defensive rebounds and blocking 6 shots. He was also active on the offensive end grabbing 9 offensive rebounds and scoring 12 points.

Basketball New Zealand has today announced that chief executive Dale Stephens will be changing roles within the organization.

With the FIBA U19 World Championship for Men being scheduled for Auckland in July, Stephens will transfer his promotional and media skills to the BBNZ legacy programme set up in conjunction with that tournament.

U19s Premierships Draws

Basketball New Zealand’s second week of tournaments in 2009 tips-off with the U19 premierships at four venues around the country on Friday.

Harbour hosts the Zone 1 premiership, Tauranga is the venue for Zone 2, Wellington for Zone 3 and Zone 4 teams will play for South Island supremacy in Christchurch.

Giants Win, Pistons Unbeaten

ecogise Nelson Giants chalked up their second win of the season with a 97-74 victory over 0800 Easy LPG Hawks at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson tonight.
The win was largely due to a strong first quarter showing by the Giants that saw them take a 12 point lead into the quarter time break up 29-17. At the offensive end the Giants executed well with Phil Jones getting hot early, an ominous sign of things to come for the Hawks.

Dillon Boucher just coming off a successful season with the NZ Breakers has got a rare triple double in just the first round of the NBL. Boucher tallied 18 points (7/10FG), 18 rebounds and 10 assists. He was very unlucky not to earn Player of the Week honors. If the Auckland Stars team had won then he would of been named player of the week but Stars fell to the Appliance Shed Harbour Heat 93-81.

Breakers Pair All-ANBL

NZ Breakers guards Kirk Penney and CJ Bruton have been named in the Australian National Basketball League’s All-Star Five. Despite the team being eliminated in the ANBL semifinals, the star Breakers pair joined Melbourne Tigers Chris Anstey and Ebi Ere, and Mark Worthington of the champion South Dragons, in the five named on Wednesday.
