Penney Best For Month

NZ Breakers shooting star Kirk Penney and South Dragons coach Brian Goorjian have won the Player and Coach of the Month awards respectively in the Australian NBL for September/October.

Penney was a spitfire for the Breakers between Rounds One and Seven, averaging 26.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.3 assist and 1.0 steal per game for the month. The former NBA player shot the ball at 49 percent from the field, a sizzling 37 percent from beyond the three-point line and made an impressive 87 percent of his foul shots.

The New Zealand Breakers have avenged an Australian National Basketball League overtime loss to the Cairns Taipans three weeks ago by winning 93-81 at the Cairns Convention Centre on Wednesday night.

The Breakers trailed for much of the match but finished the stronger with a 26-14 final term guiding them to victory.

Kirk Penney has picked up his second Player of the Week honour of the 2008-09 Australian National Basketball League season after the NZ Breakers star was named as the Round Eight award winner.

Penney, who also took out the NBL’s weekly honours in Round One and is an early favourite for League Most Valuable Player honours, led his team to a 1-1 record for the week.

Current National Basketball League All-Star Ernest Scott will continue to chase the NBA dream this Northern winter.

Scott, a star for the regular season champion Wellington Saints in 2008, was one of three former NBL imports selected in last week’s NBA Development League Draft, being joined by former Auckland Stars guard Brock Gillespie and Taranaki Mountain Airs scoring champion Garry Hill-Thomas.

Tall Ferns point guard Angela Marino produced a top shelf performance in Australia’s Top End in round six of the Australian Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).

Marino had 23 points (7/12 FG, 4/6 3pt, 5/5 FT) to go with five assists, three rebounds and a steal in 29 minutes as the defending champion Adelaide Lightning defeated the Perth Lynx 117-83 in Darwin on Saturday night.

With three starters out, Chris Daniel took it upon himself to steer the Singapore Slingers home last week.

The New Zealand Breakers have moved to second spot on the Australian National Basketball League ladder after handing the Melbourne Tigers a heartbreaking 86-84 defeat at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday night.

In a game that gave fans a tantalizing preview of what the playoffs will be like this season, the visitors led by as much as 22 points in the third quarter (67-45) but a Sam Mackinnon-inspired Melbourne outfit flexed its considerable muscle to completely eliminate the deficit in the final quarter although never managing to wrest back the lead it only ever enjoyed in the first quarter.
