The NZ Breakers will once again stake a claim for Thursday night in the sporting diary with the release on Friday of the official draw for the 2009-10 Australian National Basketball League (ANBL). Basketball Australia made the draw official today for the eight-team league, one that will include the Melbourne Tigers after their decision to enter the league late last week.

Cluster Camp Invitees
Basketball New Zealand has confirmed invited U17 and U15 athletes for the second and third development cluster camps in July and August. The selected U17 athletes will train at cluster camp #2 at five venues around the country on July 25-26 while the U15 athletes will work-out at cluster camp #3 on August 22-23.

Evans, Lacey MVPs At U19s
Canterbury’s Sam Evans and Harbour’s Anna Lacey collected the Most Valuable Player glassware at the BBNZ U19 National Championships in Nelson on Monday. Evans, a nuggety forward, provided the backbone for Canterbury’s formidable defence during their run to the men’s title, while diminutive point guard Lacey guided Harbour to their second women’s title in three weeks.

Adams, Stockill MVPs At U17s
Wellington’s Steven Adams and Hawke’s Bay’s Josie Stockill claimed the most valuable player glassware at the BBNZ U17 National Championships in Palmerston North on Monday. Adams top-scored with 19 points as Wellington defeated West Auckland 73-71 for the boys championship, while Stockill finished with 13 points as Hawke’s Bay claimed the girls title with a 67-53 win over Waitakere City.

Round 12 of the NZCT National Basketball League wrapped up with three games on Saturday night. Appliance Shed Harbour Heat beat the 0800 Easy LPG Hawks 83-73 at the NSEC on Auckland North Shore, Waikato Pistons beat the ecogise Nelson Giants 76-73 at the Trafalgar Centre and the Bartercard Christchurch Cougars dismissed the McDonalds Manawatu Jets 84-58 at Cowles Stadium.

Blown off the court in the first quarter, Nelson, backed by a cheering section of students from Nelson College for Girls, came from double-digits down to defeat Western Bay of Plenty 65-63 in a crucial pool C game.

300 Coming Up For Pero
Waikato Pistons legend Pero Cameron will play his 300th NBL game and it will be ironically at the gym where he led his Pistons to the 2008 championship. Cameron scored a game high 20 points in the Pistons 84-79 victory over the Century City Saints at TSB Bank Arena to win his eighth NBL championship.
