Basketball New Zealand is the national sporting organisation responsible for the development, promotion, governance and control of basketball throughout New Zealand.
New Zealand’s reputation in the international basketball community has grown considerably in recent years following exceptional performances at all levels of participation and competition. Domestically, the game has never been stronger with an estimated 240,000 people playing basketball throughout New Zealand.

Tickets Go On Sale
An event which promises to be one of the sporting highlights of the year in New Zealand has taken another major step forward with the announcement of ticket sales for the 2009 U19 FIBA World Championship for Men to be held in Auckland 2-12 July.
Sixteen teams from around the world including the basketball strongholds USA, Argentina, Croatia, Australia, Greece and Spain will take part in 62 matches with up to 300 athletes and more than 60 officials expected to attend, along with numerous official FIBA delegates and around 100 player scouts.

Heat Sign New Import
The Appliance Shed Harbour Heat has made a change to their roster for the remainder of the NZ Community Trust Basketball League
Import forward Chaz Spicer has returned home to the United States and been replaced by 6”9’ forward Mike Bell. 26 year old Bell is a big unit and can score with a good jumper, hurt teams with an outside shot and bang with the best of them off the boards and in the paint, something that has been an area of concern for Coach Tony Webster.

U21s Day Three Results
The semifinalists have been set at the BBNZ U21 National Championships in Tauranga.
Defending men’s champions Porirua topped Hutt Valley in their final pool game to finish number one in pool A, ahead of West Auckland, while Harbour remained unbeaten in pool B, surviving a half-court buzzer-beater to beat Waitakere City/Otago.

Saints Spank Injury Prone Dynamos
The Century City Saints have beaten the Devon Dynamos Taranaki 107-59 at the TSB Bank Arena in Wellington tonight.
The Dynamos cause was not helped with import Eric Vierniesel going down with a nasty ankle sprain in the fourth minute of the first quarter and not returning to the court again in the game.

Dennis New Ferns Coach
The Tall Ferns senior women’s programme has ushered in a new era, with Basketball New Zealand appointing Shawn Dennis as head coach.
Dennis, currently the coach of the Bay Hawks in the National Basketball League and a former national women’s assistant, has inked a two-year deal to guide the young Tall Ferns through a crucial development phase.

Emerging JTFs Surprise
The New Zealand Emerging Junior Tall Ferns caused the major surprise on day one of the BBNZ U21 National Championships in Tauranga on Wednesday.
The Emerging Ferns, the U17 national team coached by Sue Pene, shocked Waitakere City/New Plymouth 63-53 in their opening game at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, then followed it with a convincing 78-58 win over Waikato.

NZCT NBL Preview: Round Nine
The Waikato Pistons will have a couple of challenging road games this round, which could see them edge closer to the top.
Arguably the game of the round will be when the 0800 Easy LPG Bay Hawks play the Pistons at Pettigrew Green Arena on Friday. The Hawks have lost two in a row which included a shock 107-93 loss to the McDonalds Manawatu Jets last Friday.

Jones Jets to POW
McDonalds Manawatu Jets import Marcel Jones continues to impress being named Round Eight Player of the Week in the NZCT National Basketball League.
Jones scored 38 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had 2 blocks in arguably the upset of the season as the Jets took down the 0800 Easy LPG Bay Hawks 107-93.

Bradshaw Outside Playoffs
Tall Blacks centre Craig Bradshaw is, for now, on the outside looking in on the playoffs in Spain.
Bradshaw and Grupo Begar Leon put up a fight but eventually fell 82-78 at home to competition leaders CB Valladolid in round 32 of the LEB Gold, Spain’s second tier league, on Sunday.

Giants Top Of The Pack
The ecogise Nelson Giants have defeated Bartercard Christchurch Cougars 80-69 at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson tonight to take outright first place after round eight of the 2009 NZCT National Basketball League.
The Giants got of to a rocketing start jumping out to a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Cougars finally got into the game and matched their hosts throughout the middle stages of the quarter before letting it slip in the last two minutes with a couple of turnovers and poor shot selection that saw the Giants take the quarter 24-11.

Jets Over The Hill
After losing Ben Hill this week the McDonalds Manawatu Jets rocketed to a 107-93 victory over the 0800 LPG Bay Hawks at Arena Manawatu in Palmerston North tonight.
Jets forward Marcel Jones took a game high 38 points leading his team to an unlikely victory after the recent news that their former team mate Ben Hill would be transferring, ironically, to the Bay Hawks for the remainder of the season. Hill sat out tonight’s game as part of the transfer agreement reached between the Hawks and the Jets.

21 For U21s
Basketball New Zealand’s first national tournament of 2009, the U21 National Championships in Tauranga from May 6-9, has grown by eight teams from a season ago.
A combined 21 teams – 10 men’s and 11 women’s – will compete for the championships at Tauranga’s Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre next week, a rise from the 13 teams that contested the 2008 U21 National Championships in Wellington last March.

Pistons Power Over Stars
The Waikato Pistons have beaten Youthtown Auckland Stars 68-85 at the ASB Stadium in Auckland tonight. For the Pistons the win takes them to 6-1 for the season while the Stars loss leaves them firmly outside the top-six with a 2-6 record in the 2009 NZCT National Basketball League.
The Pistons dominated the game from start to finish after Pistons rookie sensation Thomas Abercrombie slammed a dunk home inside 10 seconds to take a lead that would never be lost. At the first quarter break the Pistons were ahead 23-14.

Marks, Hornets Eliminated
Kiwi NBA star Sean Marks’ career-best postseason came to a premature end in Denver on Thursday.
Marks and his New Orleans Hornets were eliminated from the NBA Playoffs after a 107-86 loss to the Denver Nuggets, completing a 4-1 series loss in the Western Conference first round.

Green Appointed U21 Coach
Four-time National Basketball League champion coach Jeff Green will make his return to top-level basketball in June.
Basketball New Zealand has confirmed his appointment as the Emerging Tall Blacks (U21) head coach on Thursday for the FIBA Oceania Tournament in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, from June 21-27.
