Dragons Slain Again

Veteran Aussie Tony Ronaldson has led the Harvey Norman NZ Breakers to a 94-88 pre-season win - their second in as many days - over the South Dragons in Melbourne.

The Breakers followed up a one-point overtime win over the same opposition the night before with a more controlled performance in Game Two, streaking out to a 20-point halftime lead on the back of a dominant 32-12 second quarter.

Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis said his squad played smart basketball and strong foundations were being built for the team’s season opener against Cairns on the North Shore in a fortnight.

Former NZ Junior Tall Fern and Canterbury guard Mandy Caldwell has taken up a scholarship at Florida Southern College under former Otago women’s coach Jarrod Olson.

Caldwell (19) has represented New Zealand through the age groups, most recently the 2007 NZ U21 Junior Tall Ferns, and has consistently been a top performer at national age group championships.

In 2006, she was selected to tournament teams at the U19 and secondary school nationals, and this year, the 2007 NZ U21 championships.

Studies all but ground to a halt for the 50 senior pupils at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Ruamata during last week’s Furnware Secondary Schools Basketball Premierships.

The decile 1 school was a beneficiary of Basketball New Zealand’s new “A” division for small schools under 600 co-ed students or 300 single sex, entering teams in both the boys and girls grades of Zone 2.

Dominion Finance NZ Tall Black point guard Lindsay Tait scored 14 points to help Wollongong Hawks to an Australian NBL pre-season victory over West Sydney Razorbacks.

Tait’s back-up and fellow Kiwi Jeremy Kench had seven assists as the Hawks edged the Pigs 107-100.

Kerr Back In Fern Fold

Veteran forward Aneka Kerr returns from knee surgery to bolster the NZ Tall Ferns for the FIBA Oceania Championships in Dunedin later this month.

Kerr (26) underwent a second reconstruction to her left knee late last year and has been rehabilitating with a view to playing for the new Christchurch Sirens franchise in the Australian WNBL.

But after missing most of the national squad’s programme this year, the 2004 Athens Olympian has been added for the Beijing qualifying tournament, her first competitive outing since collapsing to the court last November.

Harbour Heat guard Hayden Allen bounced back from a stint in hospital to lead the Singapore Slingers to a 93-72 win over RP Harbour Centre National Team at the Brunei Cup in the Philippines.

Allen is on trial with the Australian NBL franchise after sharing Outstanding Kiwi Guard honours in the local 2007 Dominion Finance NBL, where he averaged 16.6 points (47.1% FG, 79% FT).

But soon after arriving in Singapore, he was admitted to hospital suffering from dehydration and a viral infection.

X's & O's - The Shuffle Offence

The Melbourne Tigers shuffle offence requires every player to be capable of playing every position and it is not unusual for the power forwards and centres to be playing the same roles usually reserved for guards.

It has been argued that moving the big players away from the basket reduced their rebounding potential and high percentage scoring opportunities, but equally it can create problems for opponents, who, in many cases, are unfamiliar with defending on the perimeter.

Similarly, developing our guards to be effective post-up players provides numerous to exploit mis-matches.
