Juniors Named For Schweitzer

US-based players Dion Prewster and Ritchie Edwards will lead the Junior Tall Blacks to the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany next month.

A strong 12-man squad was named for the event after last week’s All-NZ Camp in Palmerston North … most were members of the roster that attended The Big Event in Las Vegas last year.

The Harvey Norman New Zealand Breakers have celebrated Tony Ronaldson’s entry into the elite 600 club by taking another top-six scalp, downing the Melbourne Tigers 105-91 at North Shore Events Centre on Thursday night.

The win sees the Breakers move up to fifth place on the HUMMER Championship NBL ladder and continues their winning run of four straight victories including two versus top-six teams.

The Christchurch Sirens ended the AIS’ Australian Defence Force WNBL playoff aspirations with a 76-55 win over the Institute at Cowles Stadium on Saturday night.

Our team has always been rated among the top in the FIBA rankings, but at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, we were in a transition period with a new generation of younger players. We finished ninth at that competition.

The key player in our team was the centre-power forward Kwe Yong Kim. She is 1.91m tall and shoots extremely well inside the three-second lane and at the free throw line.
