Academy Back On Court
An important piece of the women’s basketball puzzle, the New Zealand Women’s Academy tips-off its third camp on the North Shore on Friday night. The three-day camp at the North Shore YMCA brings together 20 female athletes from around the country in the 18-22 age-group for specialised instruction from top level coaches.

Giants Romp Over Stars
Youthtown Auckland Stars have been soundly beaten by ecogise Nelson Giants 92-57 at the ASB Stadium. The win takes Nelson to top of the table for the night with a 6-2 win-loss record. Giants got great production from Chris Reay, who had his best game of the season with 17 points, 16 rebounds and not missing a field goal (7/7 FG) . . .

ecogise Nelson Giants will travel up North to play the double playing Youthtown Auckland Stars on Thursday and then the Appliance Shed Harbour Heat on Friday. Davies Delivers But No W
Wellington’s Nick Davies put together two quality performances but could not deliver the New Zealand men’s team their first win at the Australia U18 Championships on Wednesday. Davies posted a double-double with 17 points (6/17 FG, 2/6 3pt, 3/5 FT) and 10 rebounds, along with four steals and three blocks in 37 minutes as NZ fell 81-55 to West Australia Country . . .

Cameron Set For Return

The Waikato Pistons may finally have Waikato basketball legend Pero Cameron on court this week. Cameron has missed all five Pistons game this season with damage to tendons in his right foot, but Pistons chief executive John Davey believed the Tall Black was better than a 50-50 chance to take the court this Saturday against the Christchurch Cougars at Hamilton’s YMCA.

U18s Improve In Gawler
New Zealand’s teams put in improved performances on day four of the Australia U18 Championships on Tuesday. Playing without their leading scorer, Harbour’s Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson, the NZ men fell 72-53 to New South Wales Country (3-1) in Gawler, South Australia, leaving them 0-3 ahead of Wednesday’s double-header.

Saipan Men Sought
Basketball New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest from players for the Emerging Tall Blacks (U21) team to contest the FIBA Oceania Tournament, June 20-28, in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. Although the tournament is an open event (no age restriction), BBNZ will be sending only athletes aged under 21 on December 31, 2009.

Winless at the Australia U18 Championships, the schedule only gets tougher for the New Zealand women on Tuesday. Following an 88-50 loss to ACT on Monday, their fourth straight at the championships in Gawler, South Australia, NZ face pool two unbeaten front-runners Victoria Country (4-0).

Jones Reaches 5000 Mark
Tall Black and ecogise Nelson Giants guard Phill Jones scored 28 points to become the 10th person to score 5000 NBL points in the Giants 99-89 win over the Jets in round six. Jones’s 28 points (9/14 FG, 5/8 3pt) and 11 assists in a 99-89 win over the McDonalds Manawatu Jets was also good enough to win Round Six Player of the Week honors.

Marks In As Hornets Buzzed
New Zealand’s lone NBA star Sean Marks scored his first playoffs points but his New Orleans Hornets were outplayed 113-84 in game one of their Western Conference quarterfinals series against the Denver Nuggets on Monday. Marks threw down a dunk off a Chris Paul assist with 3:38 remaining in the second quarter, pulling the Hornets within two points at 45-43 . . .

Dickel Dodges The Drop
Former Tall Blacks point guard Mark Dickel made a significant contribution in a win that could save his team from relegation in Greece. “Sparky” Dickel had his most productive game since joining AS Trikala after the Christmas break, scoring 12 points and adding four assists and two rebounds in 31 minutes in a crucial 73-61 home win over Egaleo on Thursday in round 25 of the Greek A1 league.

Close Loses For U18s
New Zealand teams suffered close losses on the second day of the Australia U18 Championships in Gawler, South Australia, on Sunday. Otago’s Samara Gallaher recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds as the NZ U18 women went down 60-55 to West Australia Country in their morning game, before falling heavily, 89-39, to South Australia Metro later in the day.

New Zealand’s U18 teams were on the wrong end of big scores on the first day of the Australia U18 Championships in Gawler, South Australia, on Saturday. With Harbour’s Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson top-scoring with 17 points, the Kiwi men fell 103-60 to South Australia Metro in game one, the scoreline ballooning with a 35-11 fourth quarter.

The Christchurch Cougars have beaten Devon Dynamo Taranaki 93-74 at Cowles Stadium in Christchurch, whilst ecogise Nelson Giants have beaten McDonalds Manawatu Jets 99-89 at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson tonight. The Cougars proved too strong for a Taranaki team down on luck and now 0-7 in the 2009 NZCT National Basketball League.

JTBs Taking Shape
From a pre-Christmas extended squad of 30, the NZ Junior Tall Blacks squad for July’s 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men in Auckland has almost reached its final form. Head coach Kenny McFadden and his coaching staff trimmed the squad to 15 following the JTBs third preparation camp at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua over Easter.

U16 Turkish Drills
Mustafa Derin is the assistant coach of Tofas Bursa team (Turkish second division) and is also the head coach of U16 Turkish National Team, guiding them to the bronze medal at the 2008 FIBA U16 European Championship.
