FIBA U19s Schedule Set
The New Zealand Junior Tall Blacks will meet Argentina in the primetime game on the opening day of the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland from July 2-12, after FIBA confirmed the tournament schedule on Friday. The JTBs, coached by Kenny McFadden and currently in camp in Porirua, will tip-off their first age-group world championship . . .

The New Zealand U18 men opened the Vilagarcia Basket Cup in Spain with an 82-45 loss to the Czech Republic on Thursday. With captain Canterbury’s Ethan Rusbatch leading the way, top-scoring with nine points and 12 rebounds, the Kiwis kept the game within reach . . .

Round Four Player of the Week goes to Giants import Jarryd Loyd who scored 27 points in a victory over the Pistons to put Giants on top. Livewire guard Loyd who is also grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and had 4 steals in the 80-73 road win against the Pistons last week.

Huskies Hurt Harmon
Tall Ferns forward Jillian Harmon saw first-hand on Monday the power of the University of Connecticut. Harmon scored two points (1/5 FG, 0/2 FT), with two rebounds, an assist and steal in 25 minutes as her Stanford Cardinal were rolled 83-64 in the Women’s NCAA Final Four in St Louis, Missouri.

The Christchurch Cougars beat the McDonalds Manawatu Jets 88-82 in Palmerston North today to round of an excellent road trip and take two wins back to the mainland. After beating the Century City Saints in Porirua last night the Cougars had to back up in Palmerston less than 24 hours later . . .

Cougars Maul Saints
The Christchurch Cougars have defeated the Century City Saints 90-75 on the road at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua tonight. The Cougars set the tone for the night early taking the first quarter 27-15 as they cleaned up both the defensive and offensive boards and by game end had won the boards 47-29.

ecogise Nelson Giants have beaten the Waikato Pistons 80-73 at the YMCA Hamilton tonight to end the Pistons undefeated start to the 2009 NBL. The game got off to a flying start with both teams racking up the points in an open first quarter that ended with the Giants ahead 28-25.

Stephens Changes Roles
Basketball New Zealand has today announced that chief executive Dale Stephens will be changing roles within the organization. With the FIBA U19 World Championship for Men being scheduled for Auckland in July, Stephens will transfer his promotional and media skills to the BBNZ legacy programme set up in conjunction with that tournament.
