Hi there
Stacker Signs Up
Former Townsville Crocs coach Ian Stacker has been confirmed as a guest presenter at the BBNZ Labour Weekend Coaches Workshop, October 20-22.
Over 25 years as a professional basketball coach, Stacker has compiled an impressive career at all levels of the game, beginning with Victoria state age group teams, a decade as an assistant in the NBL and the past nine as head coach.
He has twice been voted NBL Coach of the Year and took Townsville from competition easybeats to perennial contenders, guiding them to the 2001 grand final and the semifinals on three other occasions. Stacker has coached 285 NBL games for a 143-142 record, but sat out last season to develop the Ian Stacker All-Star Scouting Service.

Laying Down The Law
The Australian National Basketball League has unveiled its new “points of emphasis” for the 2007/08 season, with the league’s referees set to crack down on a number of areas including travelling violations and contact on the ball handler.
Each season, the NBL’s games committee determines the points of emphasis which will influence how the rules are to be interpreted by all officials as a way of ensuring maximum consistency of rulings.
For the 2007/08 NBL season, which commences on September 19, the points of emphasis include a closer scrutiny of hand and body contact on the ball carrier, as well as a tighter focus on players taking additional illegal steps either before or after they have dribbled.

Titans CBL Three-peat
You couldn’t have scripted it any better if you had tried … the stuff classic movies are made of with a closing scene that left you tingling with excitement long after the credits had rolled and the lights come on in the cinema.
That was the case at the 2007 Conference Basketball League final in Tauranga as the Waikato Titans inflicted heartache on Porirua with the putback basket made fractions of a second before the game-end buzzer sounded.

Badgers Skinned
Point guard Angela Marino hit the go-ahead three-pointer to guide the NZ Tall Ferns to a 65-62 win over the touring University of Wisconsin Badgers in Christchurch.
But coach Mike McHugh credits the team’s defensive effort for the victory, part of a national team camp in preparation for next month’s FIBA Oceania Championships.
“They were a typical well-drilled US team … and monsters,” observed McHugh. “They smashed us on the boards.
“It wasn’t the prettiest game I’ve ever seen, but Kiwis are good at battling things out and that was what we did.”

President's Message
To all affiliated associations,
The events of the past few weeks will be of concern to you all as they have been to the board and staff of Basketball New Zealand.
Like many organizations, we have had access to additional levels of funding from gaming trusts over the past three years. The board has been concerned at the increasing reliance on this funding to support salaries within the head office.

One For The Road?
They may have let this chance slip, but the Dominion Finance NZ Tall Blacks showed they deserve another shot at Olympic qualification with a hard-fought (and still rare) 67-58 win over Australia in Brisbane.
It was New Zealand’s seventh victory over their trans Tasman rivals and only the second victory on Australian soil.
Trailing by four points into the final stretch, the Kiwis were not to be denied, producing a 13-2 run that swept them back into the driver’s seat and reclaiming some respect after their comprehensive losses earlier in the FIBA Oceania Championships.

X's & O's - High Post & Triangle Offences
By Geno Auriemma, University of Connecticut women's coach
The basic move from which we start to teach this offence is the split cut, whcih is a cut of two players around the high post.
The first one, who passed the ball, cuts first. The centre can pass the ball to one of the two cutters, or she can turn, face the backet and shoot the ball herself.
