Purcell Ready For WBC
Tall Ferns forward Charmian Purcell says it may take some time to adjust to playing against women again. Since playing for New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics last August, Purcell has had to resort to playing informal games against men to get court-time. But that will change on Thursday.

In NZCT National Basketball League action tonight the ecogise Nelson Giants have been beaten 75-76 by the Appliance Shed Harbour Heat in Nelson, the 0800 Easy LPG Hawks made light work of the Devon Dynamos Taranaki in Napier winning 92-64 and in Christchurch the Bartercard Cougars have been beaten by the Youthtown Auckland Stars 91-101.

FIBA U19s Funding Boost
Economic development minister Gerry Brownlee announced on Tuesday a government grant of $200,000 for the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men in Auckland from July 2-12. The tournament was previously given a grant of $150,000 from the government’s Major Events Development Fund.

Waikato Pistons rookie swingman Thomas Abercrombie wins Round 13 Player of the Week in the NZCT National Basketball League being the second time he has won the honor. Abercrombie won POW back in Round Three against the McDonalds Manawatu Jets when he had 12 points, 19 rebounds and 6 blocks.
